BACKGROUND
Transmission and distribution lines are crucial in West Africa due to the rapidly growing population, increasing urbanization, and the need to deliver reliable electricity to homes and businesses across the region, particularly in rural areas. However, historically, investment in generation has been roughly four times higher than transmission and distribution combined throughout Africa.
The result is a patchwork of network surpluses and stranded assets, severe power deficits and exorbitant costs for emergency power capacity and inefficient energy sources.
To help address this mismatch and ensure that electricity is traded efficiently across the continent, regional planners, such as AUDA-NEPAD and Power Africa, are prioritizing regional interconnection and other T&D projects to help increase efficiency, reduce costs, and ensure that all Africans have access to clean, reliable and affordable power.
DELEGATION
The delegation will include at least 15 West African power sector decision makers. Their names and organizations will be announced soon.
